The Double Uni Knot is actually a misnomer.
There’s another “double” version of the Uni Knot where you simply double the line and then tie the regular Uni Knot.
That’s not the one we’re talking about here.
In this article, the Double Uni Knot means tying two individual Uni Knots. It’s one of the popular ways to join a braided mainline and a monofilament or fluorocarbon leader.
It’s a quick, simple, and easy-to-tie knot for most fishing setups.
Let’s learn it in detail.
Double Uni Knot Details
Type: Fishing knot
Other Names: Uni to Uni Knot, Double Grinner Knot
ABoK Reference: NA
How to Tie the Double Uni Knot
- Lay the two lines close to each other, overlapping about 8 to 10 inches.
 - Take the braided line (White) and make a loop over the leader line (Red).
 - Make 3-4 wraps around both lines.
 - Pull the tag end of the White line to tighten the knot.
 - Now, take the leader line (Red) and create a loop over the White line.
 - Make 3-4 wraps around both lines.
 - Pull the Red line to tighten the knot.
 - Pull the standing lines in opposite directions to tighten the knot and trim both tag ends close to the knot.

- Keep the wraps neat and tight in a spiral around the standing lines.
 - If you’re tying with the slippery braided line, make 6 to 8 wraps. For thicker mono or fluoro, 4-5 turns are enough (less with heavier line).
 - Always moisten the knot before tightening to avoid heat buildup and damage to the line.

Don’t Confuse It With a Double Line Uni Knot
This is where people often get mixed up.
The Double Line Uni Knot is a variation of the single Uni Knot. You simply double the line and tie the Uni Knot with the doubled line.
This makes the knot stronger, but it’s easy to get your wraps messed up as you tighten the knot.
The Double Uni Knot connects two separate lines.
Double Double Uni Knot
The Double Double Uni knot is the stronger variation of the Double Uni Knot.
If you’re using the slippery braided line and want even more strength, you can double the braided line over itself before tying the knot.
It gives extra grip and strength when joining braid to fluoro or mono leaders. It can be useful when fishing for big species.
Pros & Cons
- Strong and dependable with a breaking strength of over 90%.
 - Quick and easy to tie, no tools needed.
 - Grip tightly and doesn’t slip easily.

- Not as strong as the FG Knot.
 - Slightly bulkier, so it may not pass smoothly through small rod guides.

Application and Uses
The Double Uni Knot is a great option when you need a secure connection between two fishing lines.
It works for lines of similar or slightly different diameters.
Most anglers use it to connect braided mainline to the monofilament or fluorocarbon leader. It works in both saltwater and freshwater fishing.
That said, the knot is a little bulkier than the FG Knot. If you use the micro guides on your rod, that might bother you, but for most casual anglers, this is not an issue.
Comparison to Other Knots
- Easier to tie than the Blood Knot, but the Blood Knot is slimmer.
 - The FG Knot is stronger and slimmer, but much harder to tie.
 - Passes easily through the guides than the Albright Knot.
 - Stronger than the Surgeon’s Knot, but the Surgeon’s Knot is faster for quick leader change.
