The Half Knot is one of the knots that shows up everywhere. If you have ever tied your shoes, you have probably tied it without even knowing.
It’s a binding knot that is tied with two ends of the rope, usually around an object.
It’s often the start of something else. It forms the first half of the Square knot or the Reef Knot.
Let’s learn it in detail.
Half Knot Details
Type: Basic Knots
Other Names: None
ABoK Reference: #47
How to Tie a Half Knot
- Cross the two ends of the rope over the support.
- Pass one end below the other.
- Pull the end out.

Pro Tip
If you are wrapping the rope around something, make sure the symmetry is maintained.
When both ends come out clean and neat, the knot holds better.
If the sides look uneven, the Knot can capsize into another knot like the Half Hitch Knot.
What Happens When You Tie Two Half Knots
When you tie two Half Knots in a row, you create another binding knot known as the Square Knot—or you can mess it up and end up with a Granny Knot.
Let’s say you make a first Half Knot “Right over Left”; the second one must go “Left over Right.”
If you repeat the same process, you don’t get a Square Knot.
You get a Granny Knot. It’s the insecure version of the Square Knot.
One more thing: the Two Half Knots should be tied around the object and not in the air. It needs the tension of being tied around something.
Otherwise, it can capsize and slip. It should never be used for critical applications.
The Big Confusion: Half Knot vs Other Knots
If you look at the structure, all three knots look the same. But they are all different knots and serve different purposes.

Half Knot vs Overhand Knot
The Overhand Knot is tied at the end of the rope. You loop one end of the rope around itself and feed it through the loop.
It functions as a stopper knot and keeps the ropes from sliding through the holes or openings.
The Half Knot uses two working ends and helps bind items together.
Half Knot vs Half Hitch
The Half Hitch Knot is used to attach the rope to a fixed object like a pole or a post.
The Half Knot binds two ends of rope around something.
Application and Uses
- Macrame arts: The Half Knot is tied around the central core that consists of at least two strands. If you keep repeating it on the same side, you end up with a spiral pattern.
- Friendship bracelets: It uses the same ideas as the macrame but is smaller. It’s used to make tight little designs and patterns.
- Scarves or bandanas: It’s used to tie the scarf around the neck or bandana on your head.
Pros and Cons
