When it comes to basic knots, the Square knot (also known as the Reef Knot) is probably the first knot we learn as kids.

It’s a simple binding knot used to tie bandages, packages, and shoelaces.

Despite it's simplicity, it’s not that strong. It slips easily if not used properly and is not meant for heavy loads.

Knot Overview

  • Type: Binding Knot
  • Knot Strength: Around 50%
  • Also Known As: Reef Knot, Hercules Knot
  • Ashley Book of Knots Reference: #1402

What's Special About the Square Knot

The Square Knot is just Two Half Knots stacked in opposite directions.

It’s easy to tie, remember, and it works well as a binding knot.

Remember the old mnemonic? “Left over right, right over left.” That’s the Square Knot.

But it should never be used as a bend (to join two ropes together).

The Ashley Book of Knots warns: “Under no circumstances should it be used as a bend…There have probably been more lives lost as a result of using a Square Knot as a bend… than from the failure of any other half dozen knots combined.”

It tends to spill if used with stiff ropes and ropes of unequal diameter.

Where'll You Use It?

Traditionally, the Square Knot was used on ships to reef sails. These days, it's used for light duty tasks where you need a quick, temporary bind.

  • Tie bandages in first aid
  • Tie shoelaces and decorative bows
  • Secure packages or parcels
  • Tie off plastic bags
  • Bundle rolled tents or tarps
  • In macrame and crafts

Knot Trivia

The Square Knot is often confused with the Granny Knot. The Granny Knot is an incorrect variation of the Square Knot that slips and jams.
