Super Munter Hitch

Updated on:

The Super Munter Hitch is a variation of the Munter Hitch that is used to lower heavy loads.

It’s tied with an extra turn over the Munter Hitch which increases friction and allows for smooth and controlled descent.

Let’s learn it in detail.

Super Munter Hitch Details

Type: Slide and Grip Knots

Other Names: Double Munter, Monster Munter, Super Italian Hitch, Super Crossing Hitch

ABoK Reference: Not Listed

How to Tie the Super Munter Hitch

  1. Tie a standard Munter Hitch.
  2. Pass the brake strand around the loaded end.
  3. Make a bight and clip it into the carabiner.
  4. Lock the carabiner and tighten the knot.

Super Munter Hitch Step by Step

To tie the Super Munter Hitch, first start with the Munter Hitch. Then, take the Brake strand and pass it around the load strand. Make a bight and clip it into the carabiner.

To lower the load, simply ease up on the brake strand and the extra friction keeps things smooth.

Pros & Cons

  • Increased friction means better control for heavier loads.
  • Lower kinks and twists as the second Munter Hitch reverse the twist of the first.
  • Not popular in normal climbing—the friction is just too much.
  • Difficult to flip the knot like the Munter Hitch because of increased friction.

Application and Uses

  • Search and Rescue: It produces tremendous friction to lower extra-heavy loads like haul gear bags or even two climbers.
  • Rappelling: It works well on a single strand when you want increased friction so that there’s more control on the descent.

Optimal Gate Position

super munter hitch optimized for gate position

If you tie the Super Munter Hitch starting from the Munter Hitch, the gate position is optimal for the Munter Hitch.

But when turned into the Super Munter Hitch, the brake position gets reversed and ends up near the gate side—this is not the optimal position.

If you are planning to use it in this setup, make sure the brake strand does not rub against the gate.

If you intend to create the Super Munter Hitch from the Munter Hitch, the carabiner position should be reversed in the beginning so that the gate stays clear from the brake strand.

Want to lock the Super Munter Hitch in place?

Instead of opening the carabiner to complete the second Munter Hitch, pass the bight through and tie Two Half Hitches.

It’s easy to untie—it provides complete control and confidence after the Two Half Hitches are released.
