The Gasket Coil is used to store rope or cords, especially long lengths of rope or extension cords.

It’s secure, neat and can be used quickly without twists or tangles.

Let’s learn it in detail.

Gasket Coil Details

Type: Rope Coil

Other Names: Buntline Coil

ABoK Reference: #3089

How to Tie the Gasket Coil

To Tie the Gasket Coil, wrap the coils in your hand alternating between the over and under turns. Once the coil is completed, wrap the rope around the coil from the bottom and work upward. Finally, pass a bight through the coil, spread the bight out, bring it back through the coil, and pull it tight.

Step-by-step Guide:

Step 1: Coiling the Rope

  1. Hold the rope in your non-dominant hand.
  2. Using your dominant hand, twist the rope forward as you form the “over” loop and place this loop in your non-dominant hand.
  3. Invert your thumb so it faces down. Twist your wrist back up as you make the “under” loop and place the loop in your hand.
  4. Repeat the pattern until the entire rope is coiled.

Step 2: Securing the Coil

  1. Wrap the end around the coil several times starting from bottom and moving upwards.
  2. Feed the bight through the coil loop.
  3. Spread the bight open and bring it back down over the coil.
  4. Pull to tighten the coil.

To release the coil, lay the coil on the floor or table with the starting end underneath. Then, untie the end that wraps the coil. It should release the coil without any tangles.

Application and Uses

The Gasket Coiling is popularly used to coil ropes like climbing ropes, extension cords, or any long ropes.

It prevents them from tangling, extends their lifespan, and allows for the quick deployment of the rope without fighting any tangled mess.
